Foyers: The First Impression

What is the impression that visitors get when entering your home for the first time?

We all just get one chance for a good first impression. Is your foyer welcoming, inviting, an expression of who you are? See my formula for a great foyer and be inspired by some beautiful examples of great foyers.

Love a Great Chair!

I love chairs. Chairs are like people, they each have a unique personality. Some are serious, some quirky, some are feminine while others are masculine. Some are quiet, others are loud and quite noticeable… you get the picture. A great chair can be the inspiration for a room, or just what is needed to complete and make a space special and interesting. In this post I show many examples of great chairs for interior design projects. There is also a book review of Chairs: A History by Florence de Dampierre.

Where Do I Begin?….Becoming Aware.

Generally the first question asked by most clients is “where do I begin?” So, to start the process, the first thing I do, is get to know what a client likes, and how they want to feel in their space. This includes preferences regarding style, color and texture. To become aware of your style, look in magazines and cut out images of what you love. Take pictures of items on a shopping trip to furniture and antique stores of items you are drawn to. Walk through a fabric store and get clipping of fabrics that appeal to you visually and texturally. Ask your self—how do I want to feel in the space I am working on. Write down your responses. Weather you are going to be working with a designer, or doing it yourself, gathering your inspirations will help you become aware of your style preferences, and desired “feeling” outcome of your space.
